Somnivores are small celestial creatures that eat dreams.

Their exact origins are unknown, but they're speculated to share lineage with vampires and infernal creatures such as imps and succubi. Unlike the predator and prey relationship that their ancestors have with humans, somnivores have a more symbiotic one. A somnivore's aura ensures a deep slumber, and in exchange they'll consume or harvest whatever dreams are had. The only consequence is that the dreamer will be unable to recall any of their dreams after waking.With a steady diet of dreams, a somnivore's magical abilities will flourish. Somnivores can be trained to perform a wide variety of spells using their celestial magic. Together, a colony of somnivores can perform a "shared dream" - their combined power able to go as far as altering reality itself. The first colony of somnivores used this power to create a pocket dimension, now known as Reverie. This mysterious realm is a sanctuary for magical beings where the night is eternal and the air hums with mana.

The signature traits of a somnivore are their dazzling horns and wings, which are materialized using the dream essence that they eat. This physical manifestation of dreams glows faintly and swirls with clouds and stars- the colors reflecting the emotions and contents of the dreams themselves. All dreams fall into one of the five core categories; sweet, energetic, strange, passionate, and dreadful. Each of these types have a distinct taste to somnivores.

Somnivores are very picky eaters, each one having their personal palate limited to only one or two flavors of dream. They have evolved to behave this way, as early somnivores who ate dreams indiscriminately befell an... unfortunate fate. Containing too many different facets of the human consciousness at once can drive an infernal creature to madness.

Similar to their vampire ancestors, somnivores posses the ability to easily shapeshift from their bat form into a humanoid demon. These demons come in many shapes and sizes, but stand apart from humankind with their unnatural skin tones, pointed ears, fangs, tail, and of course- large celestial horns.

With proper guidance from a shapeshifting guru, somnivores are able to change the appearance of their bat or demon forms to their own preferences. However, the type of dreams they eat can never change- meaning that the colors displayed inside their horns and wings will remain the same regardless of any transformations the rest of their body undergoes.

eyes ◉

Two eyes. Sclera must be white.Abnormal and/or extra eyes can be obtained with the all-seeing trait.

Somnivores can have regular human legs or feet that mirror the type they have in their bat form.

Demons have unnatural skin tones. Colors that blend in easily with the night are the most common.Natural human skin colors are possible with the daywalker trait.

  • Any cold tone (blue, purple, green, etc.)

  • Vibrant, unnatural warm tones

limb gradients 🖐️

A somnivore's demon form may have gradient limbs- these colors should mirror the corresponding location on their bat form.Up to 3/4 of the limb.

  • Fingers / Hands / Arm gradients are optional

  • Leg limb gradients are mandatory if feet are non-human. Optional if they are human.

markings 💫

Markings should be inspired by fur patterns present on the bat form, though they don't need to be 1:1 due to the difference in size.Up to 1/3 skin coverage.

Nubs

A somnivore's nubs serve as the base that their horns form around. They can always be seen inside their horns.

Small & hard horn-like protrusions. Can be on the forehead or top of head.

These nubs are still small, but allow for a variety of new shapes and textures.

Allows for non-celestial aprts of a somnivore's body to faintly glow. This could also include their eyes.
Cannot cover more than 1/3rd of their body.

winter coat ❄️

Allows for extra fluff to any part of the bat form's body- including the inner ear.

Small stars or constellations suspended in the air around a somnivore.

planetary rings 💫

Creates rings of light around a somnivore's body. There may be a circle or star that orbits the created path. These are intangible.

all-seeing 👁️

Allows for abnormal eyes, and/or up to 4 eyes on the face.

bed of clouds ☁️

Allows for a somnivore to materialize a single dense cloud (no larger than their body) that they are able to sit or lounge on.

lunar alignment 🌙

Allows for a small (no larger than the forehead) moon of any phase to hover around a somnivore. These are made of moonlight and are intangible.
